It looks like we are going to need a bigger bag to fit in this enormous bigger toy box to welcome this epic new Playmobil playset. Rumour has it that Playmobil has partnered up with CBS Studios to offer us a new Playmobil 70548 Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 playset that was just revealed in all its geeky glory this week. Playmobil, one of the oldest and most iconic toy brands in the world, pulled out all the stops to offer their first ever "Star Trek'' model bound for our galaxy later this year. The set is slated for release in September 2021.
Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise originating from the 1960s television series Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry. That series, now often known as "The Original Series", debuted on September 8, 1966, and aired for three seasons on NBC. It followed the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise, a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century, on a mission "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before". In creating Star Trek, Roddenberry was inspired by C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series of novels, Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel Gulliver's Travels, the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, and television westerns such as Wagon Train.
However, this is not coming cheap! This bold $499 release of the iconic sci-fi starship is easily the biggest and most deluxe Playmobil playset produced in the history of the company. It features all the classic original series characters, two interior rooms, electronic lights and sound effects controlled via a smartphone app, and loads of extras for some serious collector market desirability.
Figures include Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Ensign Chekov, Lt. Uhura, Captain James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Lt. Sulu, and Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scott" Scotty. All come equipped with phasers, tricorders, and communicators, plus a special dilithium crystal for engineering, bridge chairs and several troublesome tribbles!
It measures an epic 42 inches long and 18 inches wide, and the Enterprise includes a sturdy display cradle, plus accessory wires for ceiling suspension for a more formal display. The set showcases a gorgeous spacecraft modeled after its familiar appearance on the original series.
